CAPITAL CITY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSIONER MEETS WITH LANDLORDS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA, EBONYI STATE CHAPTER

In line with the vision of our  Governor , His Excellency Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna
Nwifuru’s administration to make Abakaliki a city to reckon with, Hon Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Inyima today had a crucial meeting with the Executives of Landlord Association of Nigeria Ebonyi state Chapter.

Receiving them in his office, Chief Inyima thanked the Executives of the Association for honouring his invitation. He informed them that the  essence of the meeting was to familiarize with them as the  new Commissioner in the Ministry of Capital City Development, educate them on the duties and responsibilities of the Ministry and sensitize them on the development agenda of the present administration.

Chief Inyima warned the landlords and property developers against developing structures in the natural water channels to curb future flood occurrence in the State and further destruction of property as well as loss of human lives to yearly flooding.

He urged property owners in the State to fulfill their civic responsibility by paying their tenement rates and other charges promptly in order to ensure that Ebonyi State Capital continues to excel and its citizens enjoy the laudable programmes of the present administration of Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. He noted that, if the tenement rates is properly harnessed, it would enhance government internally generated revenue (IGR) and accelerate infrastructures beneficial to Ebonyians.

On his Part, the Director Tenement Rate Dept, Mr Okereke Ogbonnya informed the Landlords that tenement rate is a consolidation of all property rates and emphasized that the revenue accrueing  from these charges are used for infrastructural development in the State and not for personal use of the Ministry.

On their parts, the HOD Town Planning, Mrs Esther Nwite; HOD Administration and Supplies, Mr Edezie Simon, the counterpart, HOD Works, Mr Ugbo Obasi harped on the need to have building plan before embarking on any project in the capital city. They cautioned the Landlords to refrain from abusing the Abakaliki master plan and adhere to its professional ethics.

Earlier, in her presentation, Mrs Okoro who is the HOD Health and Environment said that majority of the residents failed to keep minimal sanitation standards as set by Ebonyi State government and added that defaulters will be apprehended and tried in the court to serve as deterrent to others.

Responding, the President of the Association, Chief Augustine Okoye, his Vice, Apostle Egbo Innocent and others who spoke on behalf of other Executives commended the Commissioner for calling the meeting and  pledged their support in assisting the government in its objective of developing Abakaliki capital territory and sustaining a cleaner environment in the State. They laid emphasis on non registration of the property owners in the Association and called on government to assist them, noting that poor generation of revenue is caused by the attitude of some landlords who are not members of the Association and they are not willing to pay tenement rates. They assured the government of Ebonyi State synergy and corporation in any moment.

Court Orders Nwoba Chika Nwoba to pay 5M for damages for defaming Ebonyi Lawyer

In 2024, one Ebonyi Content Creator and Government critic, Nwoba Chika Nwoba was arrested by one of the Ebonyi State Commissioners for an alleged defamation of character and other sundry allegations. Many Lawyers abandoned him but one Barr. Chinedu Ugadu took it up and stood for him as a Lawyer. He was later granted bail, courtesy of the legal services of the said Barr Chinedu Ugadu.

A few months later (in 2024 & 2025), Social Media went agog with allegations upon allegations by Nwoba Chika Nwoba against Barr. Chinedu Ugadu, the man that released him from prison.
Mr. Nwoba through his Facebook platform called Barr. Chinedu Ugadu so many unprintable names and dared him to try taking him to court and see whether he will not regret his action. An independent inquiry proved that the bone of contention was that Barr. Ugadu demanded to be paid for the professional services he rendered for Mr Nwoba. This request was allegedly turned down by Mr Nwoba, instead he resorted to cyber bullying and defamation.

Barr. Ugadu took a decision and went to court against Chika Nwoba, alleging defamation, character assassination etc. He followed all the court processes and today, he has secured a favourable judgement. He won the case. The court awarded the sum of five million naira (#5m) to Barr Chinedu Ugadu as damages against Nwoba Chika Nwoba as he could not prove his defamatory publications to be true or justifiable (CTC of the judgement order is attached below). The court also ordered Mr Nwoba to retract the defamatory publications and tender unreserved apologies to Barr. Chinedu Ugadu.

In the present circumstance, Mr Nwoba has the right of appeal on this matter but that may be counter productive. If the appeal Court upholds the judgement of the lower court, the tendency of the court increasing the money involved is very high. It’s therefore left for Mr Nwoba to pay the #5m or proceed to the Appeal Court. Whichever option he chooses, we are all ears.

EBONYI AND THE SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE: A REAWAKENING CALL TO EBONYI GOVERNMENT AND THE CITIZENS

EZESON JONAH (NDLEA, ABUJA)

‎The problem of substance use and abuse among youths in Ebonyi State is a pressing concern that requires urgent attention. The devastating effects of substance abuse can lead to ruined lives, broken families, and a decline in the overall well-being of our communities. It is imperative that our youths understand the dangers of drug use and abuse and take a stand against this menace. These are common Substances in Ebonyi State and other South East States; Metaphetamine(Mkpuru Miri), Marijuana (Cannabis), Tramadol, Codeine syrup, Rophynol (Flunitrazepam), Cocaine, Heroin, Alcohol, Inhalants (like glue or petrol), Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), Mephedrone e.t.c.

‎Meaningful individuals in our society, including community leaders, religious leaders, and influential figures, have a critical role to play in shaping the minds of our youths. We call on these individuals to rise against drug abuse in Ebonyi State and join forces to create awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. By working together, we can create a drug-free society where our youths can thrive and reach their full potential.

‎The time to act is now. We must engage our youths in constructive activities that promote positive development and provide alternatives to substance abuse. By investing in education, sports, and other extracurricular activities, we can empower our youths to make informed choices and build brighter futures.

‎The issue of substance intake and use in Ebonyi State, Nigeria is being neglected by the state government. This is evident when compared to other states in Nigeria.

‎The NDLEA Ebonyi State Command has indeed been very active in fighting drug abuse in the state.  They have deployed officers to schools and churches as part of their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization activities . Significant arrests have been made – for example, between January and June 2025 the command arrested 212 suspects (169 males, 43 females) and seized 91.768 kg of cannabis sativa plus other psychotropic substances. Earlier in the year they also arrested 112 suspects (85 males, 27 females) and seized 55.947 kg of illicit drugs across Ebonyi  The command has secured convictions too. More than 15 persons were convicted for drug offences in Ebonyi between January till date. ‎The agency has also took commendable steps in establishing a Rehabilitation centre for those struggling with addiction. Despite that, the centre lacks government support to expand capacity. It is overwhelmed and cannot accommodate the growing number of substance abusers in Ebonyi State, whose numbers sadly increase daily.

‎However, this situation calls for urgent attention from the Ebonyi State government to support the centre and address the rising issue of substance abuse in the state.

‎Let us join hands to say no to drug use and abuse in Ebonyi State. Together, we can build a brighter future for our youths and our state. We owe it to ourselves, our families, and our communities to take a stand against this scourge and create a safer, healthier, and more prosperous society for all. No one is safe with Drug abusers!

‎Barr Tochukwu Ogalagu has dismissed as false and malicious, the recent rumours alleging that he plans to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

‎The defection rumour had circulated widely on social media, suggesting he was on the way out of the APC with many citing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a likely destination.

‎Reacting to the rumour, Chief Ogalagu described the report as a politically motivated fabrication designed to cause unnecessary tension and distraction from the work of rebuilding Ohaukwu, Ebonyi North and Ebonyi State at large

EASTER: CHIEF SUNDAY INYIMA SENDS STRONG MESSAGE TO EBONYIANS

As we celebrate Easter, We should know that Easter is the moment where all Christians around the world celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It signifies a continued acceptance moment for all Christians and demonstrates renewed hope and assurance for the redemption of all souls. Therefore, it would be very proper I use this opportunity to educate us on need to register your building plan and ensure that approval is secured before commencing the project.

Today, In Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki  some buildings have fallen to the state’s bulldozer for reasons bordering on lack of approved building plan, and contravention or distortion of approved layout by private home owners and commercial developers.

I am on this blue app to stress the importance of adhering to the terms of these licenses as part of collective efforts to create a more sustainable and compliant built environment, assuring that the state government was committed to enforcing regulations without exceptions with the aim of ensuring that the law benefits the overall living conditions in the state.

The advantages of compliance to regulations in the built industry particularly in the capital city cannot be overemphasized. A drive from the Camp David Estate  via the flyover to the State House of Assembly exposes the new look of the lock-up shops at the goat Market as against the make – shift the adored the area before now. Some other strategic areas have also received a face lift . In the coming week, the Ogbaga Road beginning from the  make-shift in front of the stadium through Igweja to Ebebe will also receive the desired attention. It’s going to be gradual, but certainly we will get there. A sustainable city is achievable and that is our target.

We need to save lives by ensuring that houses are built according to standard. At intervals, the ministry intends to conduct random integrity tests on some buildings that we have any suspicion of defects. The general public is also encouraged to assist the ministry by availing us with useful information in this regard. We have also commenced the demand for comprehensive and compulsory soil tests for any structure that is above four stories to enable us ascertain the bearing capacity of the area in question before approval is granted.

This administration of His Excellency, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is doing everything possible to ensure safety of the citizens and have a well planned city.

On behalf of my staff and family, I pray that  all Christians all over the world particularly in Ebonyi state receive the immeasurable blessings of Easter on this amazing occasion. May your Easter remain a blessing to your family and friends.

HAPPY EASTER CELEBRATION
